Strange Places: St. John

When I visited St. John a few years ago, I made plans to take a guided group hike through a nature preserve that would end with a swim at a small beach. I was expecting to see local flowers, birds, and if I was lucky, a wild tarantula.

When our group rounded the final curve of the trail and headed towards the beach, I was surprised to see a much larger mammal milling around. It turns out St. John is home to a population of wild donkeys. Originally brought to the island to power sugar mills, when they were no longer needed they were left to roam free.

The strange surprise was definitely one of the highlights of the trip!
