Hamilton took the Broadway world by storm in 2016, and it’s no secret why. It’s powerful music, talented cast, and charismatic creator and star Lin-Manuel Maranda propelled the show to 11 Tony awards and months of sold out shows.
At first, the musical did not make sense to me. A rap infused show about Alexander Hamilton? For a long time I found the idea confusing and the rabid fan base mildly irritating. Until I saw the cast perform Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down) on the Tony’s. It was unlike anything i had seen before. Soaring lyrics mixed with rap verses used to tell the story of the battle of Yorktown, the last major battle of The Revolutionary War, the British were defeated, and their surrender lead directly to the Treaty of Paris.
I was immediately impressed and downloading the soundtrack faster then you could shout Lafayette. What I like most about the show is that none of the historical figures you are familiar with are portrayed as good or bad. The all have strong personalities and talents, and we watch as they use those for both good and bad.
If you haven’t given Hamilton a chance yet, I would encourage you to do so. It is complex, rich story worth your time. In addition to sing the Tony Awards performance below, you can watch clips of PBS’s Hamilton’s America here.
