Strange Acoustics: Somewhere Over the Rainbow

One of the songs I have the most versions of is Somewhere over the Rainbow. And I still chose to feature this song knowing that I am definitely not the first person to fall in love with Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’ cover.

There is just something about this song that carries over though each version. Even though it is featured early in the Wizard of Oz, when Dorathy yearns to escape her troubles, it usually makes me think of the end if the film, when Dorothy awakes to the people she loves, declaring there’s no place like home.

It’s an amazing trick that the song performs, the lyrics are about escaping problems and leaving them behind, but leaves the listener with a sense of acceptance for the troubles around them and appreciation for the good that is there too.
